APARTMENT COMPLEX GOING
100% SMOKE FREE
St. John’s - The Newfoundland and Labrador Alliance for the Control of Tobacco (ACT) has commended The Board of Directors of Masonic Park for making the decision to declare their apartment buildings 100% smoke free effective January, 2008.
There has been increased discussion of late on the issue of secondhand smoke in multi-unit dwellings/apartment buildings. “There is solid evidence to indicate that in such buildings, smoke does indeed drift into units where non-smokers wish to enjoy a smoke-free environment.”
Kevin Coady, Executive Director of ACT states, “Since the vast majority (79%) of our population does not smoke there is an increase in complaints about this drifting smoke.”
Recently, some landlords in the United States and Canada have moved to protect tenants from secondhand smoke by declaring their apartment buildings smoke free while others are considering such a move. ACT is delighted that Masonic Park has shown leadership and courage in dealing with this issue.
Coady states that in the months ahead ACT will be encouraging other landlords to declare their apartment complexes 100% smoke free. ACT extends an invitation to anyone seeking more information on second hand smoke in apartment buildings to contact them at 709-753-0079.
